Goodbye Post

2013-08-16 12:15:22 by LilDwarf

Hello friends,

This will probably be my final post on Newgrounds. Today I found out about something which, frankly, really pissed me off.

I found out that both Donkey Kong Arcade remakes that I made were deleted by the NG Moderation team. This felt like a backstabbing for me as I was not expecting that my games, made over 2 years ago, were deleted so quickly and without giving me a warning or at least an opportunity to salvage them by changing the artwork (I assume they were deleted because I used the original sprites and whatnot). Why now? Both games were reviewed by mods when being submitted since they were using medals, why didn't they say anything then?

I'm really sad to see this happen as they were of great success here on NG and for all the hard work I put to create them. I understand WHY the games were removed, what I don't agree with is the way it was done. I think it was unfair for me, and very dictator-like from the staff. If you agree or not, let me know, I'd like to hear the opinion of other users on this matter.

What also pisses me off is the fact that there are other classic game remakes, which are still around, yet I am the one who gets his submissions deleted -___- I really don't understand. I was considering PM-ing the staff, but I don't know if it would help, what do you guys think?

I know I have not submitted anything for a while, and this site still holds a place in my heart, but I will not continue to submit content on a place where I cannot even defend myself, let alone be given the opportunity to make things right. So consider "Jetpac" my final submission to Newgrounds until further notice. Newgrounds has changed from the place it once was. Some might say for the better, but I feel as for the worse. It used to be much better back in 2006 imho.

You can still find the games online, Here is DK Arcade 1 and you can play DK Arcade Returns 2 here

It was a great time the past 7 years on NG, but this is the final draw. I still thank all of my fans who supported me throughout the years and enjoyed my movies or games. It was really fun, up until this final month of course.

Anyways thanks for everything guys, please leave a comment on your opinion on the situation, or what you think I can do.

I'll still remember the Daily 1st award I got on both submissions, they'll never take that from me :)

After realizing that 500+ submissions were deleted as consequence of a DMCA recieved by Newgrounds, I understand the reasons why I wasn't contacted. I probably WILL continue to submit anything I make to NG, but I'll only submit my original games / animations. Please understand that what I do, I do for fun. It just so happens that I enjoy porting old retro games to flash, I can't help it. But, like I said, anything I feel is original enough to be submitted to NG, I will most surely do so.

Are you fucking kidding me? I loved that game ):

LilDwarf responds:

I know buddy it sucks, I loved it as well :( At least they are still widely available on other sites

That's a real shame (and a rage inducer I might add)... did they contact you at all with regards removing the submissions at all, even when they did it? Maybe it is worth seeing if you can message the staff and see if it was just a big misunderstanding or something? In any case, it'll be a shame to see you go if you do, but if it were me, I'd fight to the bitter end! You got a Daily 1st Awards. You deserve to at least to find out the real story behind it all.

I can't really say whether Newgrounds has got better or worse since 2006 (boy that seems a while back...) but I know that it's certainly changed. I shan't voice my opinions here (it's not the place), but I do hope you get stuff sorted and decide to stick around.

Best of luck.

LilDwarf responds:

I realized that there is not much I can do :( I'll continue to submit things to NG, it's not their fault, but I'll have to limit myself to the fully original games / animations

Nintendo told Newgrounds to take the content down.
Since you were using copyrighted content.

You really should have contacted somebody rather than making this misinformed rant.

Sorry, my last comment came across as harsh, so I'd just like to mention it DOES suck that Nintendo has decided to attack fan-created content after all this time.

LilDwarf responds:

Thanks for the BBS link, it cleared things up a bit. I agree it does suck, dunno why Nintendo is deciding to be such assholes about it up until now.

Newgrounds started to suck back in 2006 because it got overrun by gamers and "retro game" kids, as well as autists who think that Sonic is the greatest thing ever, and people like you rode the craze. Let's not get into your extreme acts of copyright infringement, which were clear and illegal.

In any case, Newgrounds is better off with one last hack around. Good riddance.

LilDwarf responds:

Hahaha ok you're right about 2006 being overrun by gamers, but what's so wrong with liking retro games? You're not that much older than me, and you were also a kid once, I don't see the harm in making a silly zelda cartoon or a port of a retro game. I do admit that I didn't give much to the NG community, but you have to understand that ever since I started doing flash, I only did it because I enjoyed doing it, not because I was wanting to get money off of it, which I only did from contests on ArmorGames and similar things. If you ever make a game or animation, you would understand that the real prize is the reception of the community. That is what drove me to make all my games, and my main motivation.

We received a takedown notice listing over 500 games based on Nintendo properties, so it made it difficult to contact every person individually. In some instances I did contact people to suggest changes that could be made, but in your case the games were identical ports and there wasn't much ground to stand on.

LilDwarf responds:

I understand completely, thank you very much for responding Tom. I haven't been around for a while, so I just a while ago learned on the BBS that over 500 submissions were deleted, that made me think of what you just said, it would've been hard to contact every individual author. At the moment, I did realize that it being an identical port, it was prone to something like this, so I should not have been as shocked as I was this morning. Anyways thanks for the response, and sorry for the semi-rant, It caught me by surprise to be honest, but I now see the big picture.

I may be a Nintendo fan, but their legal threat came off as a pernicious overreaction. (Personally, I'm anti-DMCA). Oh, and I also see where you're coming from on things going downhill.
